A pretty early 20th century Afshar sumac rug from the Kerman area in south west Persia.
The sumac technique produces an elaborate flat weave face, a little textured, almost as if embroidered. Loose threads are left on the verso.
All over medallions on dark blue field within an ivory and dark blue reciprocal arrowhead main border; ribbon guards; a band of geometric motifs at each end. Little pops of orange and green bring a delightful liveliness to the colour scheme.
This is an unusual antique piece.
Slight wear in places. Slight loss to ends and edges. A couple of small holes towards the lower end have been patched to the verso.
