A luxurious 1980s carpet from Agra in India.
Carpets have been woven in Agra from the 17th century. After the partition of India in 1947, many Muslim weavers left for Pakistan but in the late 20th century, the industry revived.
As with this example, the design is flowing and quite large scale, drawing on Persian patterns but often with new motifs of their own creation.
The colour variation in the rug arises from the way the nap lies in different areas and is an inherent feature of its construction.
Thick pile, good condition.
