An antique 1920s Ersari Turkmen pardah from north east Afghanistan, woven to hang over the door of a Turkmen tent.
The hatchli (compartmented) design is typical of rugs of this kind. A tribal piece that is slightly but delightfully wonky (though actually slightly less than it appears in the photo!). A young weaver's first piece for her dowry perhaps?
All wool construction. Overall wear and corrosion with some old moth damage (not conspicuous).
