A 1940s Tekke Turkmen carpet from north Afghanistan. The characteristic gul and ari-gul motifs are rendered in dark blue, brown and natural on a soft, pale red ground that has faded from the original darker red as can be seen on the verso.
The colours are quite sensitive to light conditions. Try as we might, the central section shows as pink in the photos but in real life is more of a red-brown.
Overall even wear with a few very tiny patches of moth damage that show the darker wool beneath. Bottom edge discreetly mended by Yarn.
