Late 19th century Afshar rug with stylised gul farang motifs of bold multicoloured floral bouquets.

The gol farang (also gül farang or gul i farang (Eagleton), Gol-i-Mirza Ali or Gol-I-Frank (Edwards) literally meaning 'foreign flower') design goes back to European demand for French Savonnerie and Aubusson designs during the 19th century. It is found in different variants in Senneh, Karabagh and Afshar rugs and other origins.

All wool construction.  Considerable wear - the worst creases and splits have been mended with twill tape and darning.  But it is a beautiful piece for those who are comfortable with the "distressed" vibe.

Underlay is recommended with this rug.
