A 1920s rug from eastern Europe, possibly Ukraine.

Eastern European rugs are uncommon in comparison with those from the Middle East.  They show many influences from the Caucasus in colour and design and yet are quite distinctive.

This rug has the eightpointed star found throughout the Middle East but also static rather than flowing flower motifs in the border and two quite distinctive central medallions.  It is a lively and graceful antique that could be as well displayed on a wall as used on the floor.

In the 1920s, Ukraine was under the control of the Soviet Union after a brief period in which the Ukrainian People's Republic was formed.  In fact, conflict over this rich and strategic territory had occurred sporadically from the Middle Ages onwards.

In 2022, in a period of renewed conflict, we will be donating the proceeds from the sale of this beautiful rug to Siobhan's Trust, a wonderful voluntary organisation supplying hot food and drinks to tired, hungry and anxious refugees as they cross the Ukraine border into Poland.

Overall even wear, slight loss to lower end. Soft handle.

Underlay recommended.
